Letter to the Editor from Mary Hamel. Appeared in the Ashland Daily Press.
In a June 4 Daily Press letter to the editor, a writer expresses concern over the use of law enforcement to pursue one’s political rivals, citing the case of Donald Trump’s recent felony conviction on 34 counts.
In the Trump case it was, in fact, the New York district attorney, a grand jury, and subsequently a jury of his peers – selected by the prosecution and defense teams — who weighed all evidence and came down with a clear verdict. None of DJT’s political rivals were involved in these state charges. The federal government, including the president, and Department of Justice, had nothing to do with these charges.
In fact, we have in our current president a man who — had he been so inclined — could have pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, but chose NOT to, demonstrating his adherence to the rule of law.
I do cheer on this decision, and do not fear it could happen to me as I do not attempt to rig elections, pay off porn stars, or cheat on my taxes. As the saying goes, if you don’t want to do the time, don’t do the crime — no matter who you are.
